About Alex
Alexandra Tydings Luzzatto, RYT 500, is Washington DC native who has been dancing as long as she can remember. She studied ballet with the Washington Ballet and the American Ballet Theater, and performed at the Kennedy Center with the Royal Ballet of London. She also competed as an Irish step dancer, representing the United States at World Championships in England and Ireland.
After graduating from Brown University with a degree in film and critical theory, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actress. She appeared in numerous television series and feature films, working all over North America, Europe and the Antipodes; and for six years played the part of "Aphrodite" in the cult television series Xena Warrior Princess.
During this time she fell in love with yoga and had the opportunity to study in the US, New Zealand, and Bali, with such teachers as Shiva Rea, Rod Stryker, and Steve Ross. Always fascinated by the conversation between body, mind and spirit, she also studied afro-carribean dance, practiced tae kwon do, and learned core shamanism with Michael Harner and the Foundation for Shamanic Studies.
Soon after moving back east and taking a hiatus from acting to start a family, Alex studied to become a yoga instructor. After becoming certified, she began teaching in the DC area at local studios, at corporate and government offices including the White House Athletic Center, the CIA and the Department of Commerce, and privately.
Alexandra’s love for yoga has inspired her to continue her studies, and she traveled throughout the US to complete her advanced training and RYT 500 certification with master teachers Shiva Rea and Rod Stryker. Incorporating the flowing, almost dance like vinyasa style of Shiva Rea and the energetic Tantric practices of Rod Stryker, Alex added some great music and a joyful attitude to create her signature class, Rock and Roll Yoga, which she teaches throughout the DC area.
Whether her student is a beginner to yoga, an advanced yogi, working through and healing an injury, living with a disability, a professional dancer or athlete, a child discovering yoga for the first time, or a woman growing and changing through a pregnancy, or recovering from childbirth, Alexandra is passionate about designing classes that are appropriate to each student, and that are safe, challenging, joyful and fun.
Yoga has the unique ability to strengthen and heal the body, soothe and clarify the mind, and elate the spirit. It is a privilege to Alex to be able to share this with her students.
